Historical milestones
One of Europe's earliest manufacturers of pharmaceutical products, Roche was founded in Basel in 1896. Ever since, we have been closely bound up with the more recent history of Switzerland (particularly that of the Basel region).
We have steadily expanded our global as well as our local activities. The cornerstones of Roche's commercial success have been our achievements in the research field and in the sale of healthcare products. At the same time, we are aware that the success of a company also depends on the extent to which its practices are environmentally and socially compatible.

Roche was founded in Basel in 1896. Although the company began establishing operations abroad in the same year and today employs people in around 150 countries, Switzerland is still home to the Group’s headquarters and remains an important operational centre.
