Roche opens new administrative centre at Rotkreuz site

Basel, 06 June 2011

Over 400 million francs invested at the site in the past five years

Today Roche opened its new administrative centre in Rotkreuz, the sixth new building to be constructed at the site in the past five years. The new sixteen-storey high-rise houses 600 workstations. It will bring together all the administrative departments attached to the various Diagnostics business units at the site. The building features a novel, highly energy-efficient facade. Total capital expenditure on the project amounts to 90 million francs.

"The expansion and modernisation of the site is a clear sign of the Group’s commitment to Switzerland and to Roche Diagnostics’ site at Rotkreuz", says Roche CEO Severin Schwan. "The growing significance of Rotkreuz as one of our largest and most important Diagnostics sites is reflected both in the size of the workforce – which has more than doubled to 1600 since 2006 – and in the amounts invested, which have totalled more than 400 million francs in the last five years alone."

Site Head Jürg Erismann: "The new administrative centre provides ideal working conditions for 600 employees, allowing us here at Rotkreuz to manage a number of key global Diagnostics functions in the areas of production, development and sales. Innovative diagnostic systems help doctors and clinical laboratories throughout the world to provide patients with important results quickly, accurately and reliably." And Erismann adds: "Furthermore, the building’s extremely efficient design is in line with Roche’s sustainable energy management policy. The site has been using renewable sources to cover all its electricity needs since April 2011."

About the building

Roche Diagnostics’ new high-rise was designed by the Basel architectural practice of Burckhardt+Partner AG, which submitted the winning project in a competitive tender. Designated Building 5, it is the centrepiece of a square designed by Vogt landscape architects of Zurich. The building is part of an overall design featuring pathways, gardens and courtyards originally outlined in the site masterplan.

The high-rise is extremely energy-efficient. Environment-friendly technologies such as heat recovery and a cooling system based on borehole heat exchangers underscore its low-energy design philosophy.
