In Switzerland, social commitment plays an important role, and at Roche it's equally significant. Volunteering embodies our Roche values: integrity, courage and passion. Our colleagues immerse themselves in other environments and get involved in areas that are particularly close to their hearts. Under the motto “Stepping in where support is needed”, they worked for the community during Volunteering Week from September second to sixth, 2024.
During Volunteering Week, Roche employees had the wonderful opportunity to engage themselves in various ways in charitable projects all over Switzerland. This year, our commitment focused on four themes: Food waste, social commitment, nature and the environment, as well as animal welfare.
Some of our colleagues gave free rein to their creativity at the WERT!Stätte, concocting new dishes with leftover food. The WERT!Stätte not only combats food waste, it also supports people in difficulty by helping them to structure their day. The result: less waste and more help for those in need.
In addition, colleagues helped to collect and sort food from supermarkets and restaurants. These were distributed to people in need through Schweizer Tafel, to alleviate poverty and reduce food waste.
Another team went into the mountains to sustainably maintain pastures, forests and paths. Together with Bergversetzer, who have been placing volunteers with mountain families for 30 years, they are helping to improve livelihoods and living conditions in the mountains.
Roche employees were also active in Basel, for example at the Bürgerspital Basel (BSB), where they accompanied senior citizens and people with disabilities on excursions, or supported the BSB's own workshops and restaurants. With over 750 years of history, the BSB is a central institution promoting care for the elderly and integration of disabled people in the region.
Last but not least, Roche colleagues supported the Foundation Swiss School for Guide Dogs for the Blind with household chores. The dogs help people with visual impairments or physical limitations to live more independently, with greater mobility and self-confidence, thus reducing barriers to participation in public life.
